I want to celebrate when a developer is hired via RailsDevs. Getting a new job is a huge milestone! And as the platform that connected them to their employer I’d love to make that moment feel even more special.

The top priority is to make sure the hired developer feels special. Sure, a $20 Amazon gift card is great, but I don’t think that aligns with how significant a job change can be.
Second, developers sharing their new employer gives me the opportunity to make a connection. I can reach out and congratulate them on the new hire – ideally collecting the hiring fee and a testimonial in the process.
Heavily inspired by Japan Dev, I’m going to add a form to RailsDevs asking developers to share when they get hired. They will fill out the form and once I confirm their employment I will mail them a congratulations gift.
And what better way to celebrate than with branded swag, right?
To start, I’ll be sending each developer:
I thought about giving away an Amazon gift card (or cash) but it didn’t feel personal enough for the achievement. I would also still have to mail the stickers and handwritten thank you note, so I wouldn’t be saving on effort.
To get this in front of developers eyes I will add a CTA to the navigation bar and send automated emails.
The CTA will show up on every page linking to the form. It will only show up after a developer responds to their first conversation on the platform.
One month after replying to a new business the developer will receive an automated email asking how the conversation went. I expect this to be more effective but it can’t hurt to try both (for now).
